Many divers initially feel a bit apprehensive about diving at night, but most find it to be an incredibly peaceful and exciting experience. The underwater world completely changes after sunset! Many creatures that hide during the day become active, such as hunting moray eels, crabs, shrimp, and octopuses. You might see sleeping parrotfish creating their mucous cocoons, or even bioluminescence. Colors also appear more vibrant under your dive light.

You will need at least one reliable primary dive light and a smaller backup light. Your instructor will provide a primary light for training, but having your own is beneficial. You’ll learn how to properly use and care for your lights.

You’ll learn specific techniques for navigating in low-light conditions, combining natural navigation skills (like recognizing silhouettes or familiar features) with your dive light and compass. Communication with your buddy using light signals is also a key skill.

Your PADI Night Diver Specialty certification is valid for life and does not expire.
